ruihe: Smoking is very common among the teens and it has eventually become a trend in youngsters these days. Despite the fact that many are aware of the health hazards smoking can cause in one, the number continues to rise over the years.
jolin: i believe that smoking should not be totally banned in Singapore. Addictive smokers will go to all extremes to get what they need-cigarettes, even if it means to do it illegally.
It's true that smoking is a health hazard, but from the fact that people still continue the habit proves that it is essential for some human lives and that they neglect the harmful effects of smoking.
Mainly because of stress and unhappiness, people will choose to smoke. But I have friends telling me that they want to smoke because smoking can help them lose weight. There are also some others who smoke because they find it cool or because their friends want them to, or simply smoke to fit into a particular group of 'friends'.
Since they are determined to smoke, nothing can stop them. Lets take chewing gums for example. Some people, like me, like chewing gums. Whenever i go overseas, i will buy some. But for others, they 'smugggle' it back to Singapore.
How about drugs(definitely a no-no), people still sell them even though it's banned. Lesser people are taking drugs, so the crime rate will not be that terrible. But imagine how many people will illegally get cigarettes.
So to prevent such HIGH crime rates, cigarettes should not be totally banned, but we still should support anti-drug campaigns and not smoke. simply because smoking is not healthy and not at all cool.
zijian: for me, I believe that smoking should be totally ban in the future. But right now. Measures should be taken to control the amount of smoking that’s happen. Raising the age limit for smokers and campaigns encouraging no smoking should be imposed. Let see, if we want to impose an immediate ban, what we may be encouraging may not be no smoking but instead, black market deals which not only affects our economy but also socially. More money will be used to buy cigarettes. Also, smoking affects health in the long run, not only to the smokers but also the people around them. Some people turn to smoking due to peer pressure. Thus education is very important. Teach them from small they normally say, and this applies to us as well. Once we do not feel the need to, others will not affect us. The way to do it will be to minimize it until it is to a minimal, before we totally ban it. But all these should be done quickly as the longer we drag, the longer we have to suffer.
